Bronx Times - September 16, 2003

by the U.S. Army Reserve, which named a center after the fallen hero, who was also a staff sergeant in the Reserves.

Earlier this year, the Army Reserve dedicated the 854th Engineer Battalion in upstate Bullville in memory of Ill, who served at the center for seven years. In a ceremony this spring, Ill’s widow, their three children, his parents, his sister and other relatives, friends and colleagues witnessed the unveiling of a plaque and sign renaming the Reserve Center after Ill.

Ill perished in the collapse of the Twin Towers after responding to the unfolding tragedy with Ladder 2 in Manhattan. His son, Fred, is also a member of the FDNY.

In dedicating the center to Ill, Major General Richard S. Colt of the 77th Regional Support Command described how the virtues that Ill possessed epitomized the values of the Army Reserve and the FDNY, touching on the fallen hero’s personal courage, selfless service to others and to his country, and his loyalty, integrity and commitment
