BIKING HERO HANGING ON

NY Post - December 24, 2005

by a bus while riding his bicycle to work during the transit strike is still fighting for his life, doctors said yesterday.

Matthew Long, 39, was struck by a bus on Wednesday and remains in critical condition.

He broke both legs, an arm and his pelvis and suffered massive internal injuries.

His family urged New Yorkers to give blood, as Long required transfusions.

"We see how important it is at a time like this," the family said.

They urged anyone who wanted to donate blood to log on to the Fire Department's Web site at www.nyc.gov /fdny.

GIVE BLOOD TO HELP A HERO

New York City firefighter Matthew Long, struck down by a bus Thurs day while bicycling to work during the transit strike, remains in critical condition at New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center.

Long has undergone several operations in an attempt to control internal bleeding, and his continuing need for transfusions has stressed the hospital's already-over-taxed supply of donor blood.

There is never a bad time to donate blood in New York City, and Christmas Eve would be an especially fine time to give in the name of Matthew Long, FDNY.

For details, call 1-800-933-2566 (1-800-933-BLOOD) or check online at www.nybloodcenter.org.

And Merry Christmas.
