City firefighters have overwhelmingly approved a contract that gives them salary increases of 17% over 50 months.

According to the Uniformed Firefighters Association, 6,094 members voted for the contract while 829 voted against it.

As part of the deal, the city will retain the current 60 five-man engine companies and add four more.

"This contract vote represents an overwhelming mandate from the UFA membership," said union President Steve Cassidy. "The agreement not only provides our firefighters a wage increase, but most significantly, it serves to enhance public and firefighter safety."
