(New York-WABC, December 29, 2005) - New York City firefighters have overwhelmingly approved a new contract Thursday night.

It calls for a 16 percent pay increase over the 50 month agreement.

The Uniformed Firefighters Association says 86 percent voted in favor of the deal.

The contract is retroactive and covers the period from June 2002 through July 2006.
