Fire Breaks Out in Highbridge Church

NY 1 - March 06, 2010

Investigators were exploring what caused a fire at a Bronx church on Friday. The flames broke out a little before noon at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church in Highbridge.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the two-alarm blaze under control.

The church pastor, Father Joseph Girone, said there were about three or four people in the church at the time, and he was able to lead them outside safely.

"The receptionist came to my office screaming that the church was on fire. So I ran out and found the vestibule on fire," said Girone. "People were already there calling, and smoke was heavy, so I had to go around into the church and remove the people who were praying there."

"It didn't affect the balcony, where the organ is, which would have really devastated us more," said parishioner Lily Jones. "At least this way we can clean it up as best as possible and possibly still have our services."

No injuries were reported.
