Charges Dropped Against Dead Bronx Building Engineer

NY 1 - March 06, 2010

Officials say the building engineer charged in connection with the August 2006 fire in the Bronx that killed two firefighters has died. Jose Vargas, 84, was due to be in court Friday, but he died last month, according to his attorney.

The attorney said Vargas died of natural causes after being in the hospital for several months.

The death certificate was produced in court and the case was dismissed.

Prosecutors say Vargas failed to conduct a final inspection on the building and lied to investigators about it.

Firefighters Howard Carpluk and Michael Reilly, were killed when they were trapped after the floor collapsed.
