STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- Firefighters responding to a blaze in New Dorp Beach last night found the homeowner unconscious, suffering from smoke inhalation and severe burns, according to authorities.
Mary Curatola, 65, had to be intubated and was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, in critical condition, said FDNY Deputy Chief Peter Leicht of Division 8.
Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries, Leicht added.
The all-hands fire in Mrs. Curatola's semi-attached home at 12 Isernia Ave. broke out about 6:25 p.m., and firefighters from Engine Co. 162 were first on the scene, said Leicht.
"The men pushed open the door and she was leaning up on a wall," he said.
Also inside were three oxygen tanks, said fire officials.
The blaze apparently broke out in the first-floor living room and spread through the home, causing significant damage.
Carol Olsen has lived in the adjoining home since 1992 and was working at nearby Home Goods in New Dorp when she was called about the fire.
"My biggest fear was that this was going to happen," said Mrs. Olsen, 56, noting that she'd called the city's Adult Protective Services out of concern for her neighbor's well-being. "I tried to help her."
The blaze is under investigation by fire marshals.
