Three-Alarm Brush Fire Tears Through Great Kills Park

NY 1 - April 20, 2010

Fire officials on Staten Island say weather conditions may have played a role in a three-alarm brush fire Monday at Great Kills Park. It happened just after noon.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in less than two hours.

They say low humidity, and strong winds are always contributing factors when dealing with brush fires.

"As much as we sometimes have rain, it dries out very fast so the brush is very, very, dry -- you know, a sunny day. So it spreads very quickly and depending on the way the wind blows. Luckily today, it did jump a road about a half a mile down that way, but it didn't threaten any houses or buildings," said New York City Fire Department Chief Michael Marrone.

About seven acres burned, but no injures were reported.
