Fire Engulfs Landmarked Building On Upper East Side

NY 1 - April 23, 2010

Fire officials say spontaneous combustion of wood shavings caused a two-alarm fire to tear through the top floors of six-story landmarked brownstone on the Upper East Side early Thursday.

Flames broke out on 80th Street about 4 a.m., and tore through the building, which was designed in 1885-1886.

According to fire officials, the conflagration started in an area where the floors were being refinished, and wood shavings, dust particles and similar items naturally heated up and caught afire.

The top floors quickly succumbed to the flames, as firefighters scrambled to get the fire under control.

No injuries were reported.
