STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A large area of brush ignited a little after noon today in a part of Great Kills Park used to seeing its share of fires.

Firefighters were quick to respond to the blaze, which started around the Gateway National Recreation Area’s model airplane field.

The FDNY quickly called an all-hands fire and thereafter elevated it to a 2-alarm fire, utilizing 25 units and 106 firefighters, a spokesman told the Advance.

Unlike earlier brush fires in the area that have gone to five and six alarms, firefighters were able to contain the flames and brought it under control after about 90 minutes.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear nor was the acreage of the area that burned.
