Three-Alarm Fire Tears Through Queens Church

NY 1 - April 30, 2010

Firefighters in the Richmond Hill section of Queens battled a three-alarm fire Thursday that tore through a church and two homes. More than 100 firefighters were sent to battle the blaze along 111th Street off Atlantic Avenue.

Worried residents say it all started when a tree fell, knocking down some power lines across from the People Life Christian Fellowship Church.

The fire reportedly spread to the church after a power line snapped.

At one point, firefighters had to evacuate the church, fearing a collapse.

"Fires in churches are very difficult to fight due to the large amount of concealed spaces. So it got too dangerous to continue with the interior operation we pulled the fire units out and went to an exterior operation," said FDNY Deputy Chief John Sudnik.

"I don't think it's luck, I think it's the grace of God that it happened at a time when there was no activity in the church," said Charles Sadaphal of the People Life Christian Fellowship Church.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, but there are no reports of any injuries to residents.
