FDNY's Crown Jewel Fireboat

FoxNews.com - May 02, 2010

MYFOXNY.COM - The New York City Fire Department has a new fireboat in its fleet. The 140-foot, 500-ton, $27 million dollar boat is named "Three Forty Three," in honor of the 343 members of the FDNY who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The Three Forty Three arrived in New York Friday, entering Upper New York Harbor with an escort of Coast Guard, NYPD, and FDNY escort vessels. It will be assigned to Marine 1 on the Hudson River, replacing the 56-year-old fireboat John D. McKean.

The new boat is capable of cruising at 18 knots and can pump 50,000 gallons of water per minute, the FDNY reported.

The Three Forty Three was built by Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Florida.
