The Uniformed Firefighters Association May 1 began running radio ads on numerous stations to enlist the public's help in heading off massive firehouse closings as part of the city budget process.
The 30-second spot begins with an ambulance's wail and the sounding of a fire truck's air horn, and then UFA President Steve Cassidy states, "In the last five years, New York City firefighters have responded to more emergencies than ever before. Mayor Bloomberg has already closed six fire companies. Now he wants to close dozens more."
Mr. Cassidy continues, "The next time your family needs the FDNY for a fire, medical emergency or, God forbid, another terrorist attack, pray that firefighters don't have to drive past a closed firehouse. Because seconds count."
A narrator then urges members of the public to call the City Council, which will negotiate a final budget deal with the Mayor, at (212) 788-7100. The Council last year headed off the proposed closing of 16 fire companies, but the city's increased budget problems could make it difficult to find the funding to maintain the current level this time.
