Hailing Bravest

NY Post - May 05, 2010

The firefighters who responded to the attempted terror attack in Times Square were honored yesterday by Mayor Bloomberg for showing restraint when it counted.

"They knew not to apply water or any other extinguishing agent," the mayor said at the Midtown firehouse of Engine 54 and Ladder 4, which lost 15 of its members on 9/11.

By pulling back, the firefighters preserved a key piece of evidence -- a vehicle laden with propane, gasoline and fertilizer intended to wreak havoc on a crowded Saturday night.

Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano credited intensive training that had firefighters adopt a "slow approach" instead of rushing in aggressively.
