Three-Alarm Fire Tears Through SoHo Walk-Up

NY 1 - May 05, 2010

Fire officials are investigating a three-alarm fire that swept through a residential building in SoHo Tuesday night. It started around 8:30 p.m. on Crosby Street between Grand and Broome, in the back of an apartment on the top floor.

Firefighters say it took about an hour to bring the fire under control.

There is no word yet on the cause.

The building's owner was at the scene and says tenants offered their own clues into the cause.

"What they told me was that they were out of the apartment for a few minutes, they thought it might be some sort of electrical fire, but why they would think that I don't know there's never been any electrical problems in their apartment," said building owner Robert Kahn.

"I was watching TV on my couch and somebody knocked on the door, said there was a fire and said I should get out, so I did. I didn't smell smoke at the time but there were firefighters coming up the stairs," said one tenant.

Two people who live in the building were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.
