Bloomberg to FDNY: 'Stay Tuned' on Closures

1010 Wins - May 18, 2010

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The FDNY will have to 'stay tuned' to find out if their houses will remain open or shut down due to budget cuts.

Mayor Bloomberg says they will not release a list of fire companies it may need to close to help meet the city's budget, until the state gets its finances in order.

"We don't have a budget yet, and until then there's no reason to do anything. There is a requirement of 45 days before you close a company or a firehouse, and we will comply with the law," Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg proposed in his budget to shut down 20 fire companies on July 1st.

The mayor is now saying no decisions will be made until Albany approves a budget for New York State, which is more than five months overdue.

"I'd like to have another five or six weeks of tax revenues information to see how the tax revenues are coming in. The economy is doing somewhat better, but nobody thinks it's going better fast enough to bail us out. We're gonna have to make some serious cuts," Bloomberg predicted.

Sixteen fire companies were targeted for closure last year, but were then spared when the City Council restored funding.
