BROOKLYN (WABC) -- A serious fire in Bedford Stuyvesant and firefighters have been busy this morning making rescues.

A three story brownstone on Putnam Ave. between Bedford and Franklin Ave. caught fire shortly before 5 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters pulled people out of the homes. Firefighters say at least 9 people were hurt, suffering burns and severe heat inhalation.

There were many different apartments in the building.

The Fire Chief believes the fire started on a second floor stairway before rising to the third floor.

One firefighter is being hailed a hero after he threw his body over a woman trying to get out of a third floor window, after flames erupted near her. The firefighter took the brunt of the flames and suffered injuries.

"The fire engulfed the firefighter as he protected the occupant and put that person on the ladder," said Chief Pfeiffer.

Three of the injuries are listed as serious.
