Big Apple Soccer - August 31, 2010

HARRISON, N.Y. -- The New York Police Department defeated the Fire Department of New York, 3-1, in the second annual Mayor's Cup at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

Daniel Brandi, Carlos Villacres and Justin Bernstein scored for the NYPD, who avenged last year's 3-0 defeat.

A NYPD defender accidentally put the ball in his own net as he tried clear the ball off the goal line.

Brandi equalized in the 21st minute. Some 15 minutes later, Villacres scored off of a clear shot from the front of the net.

NYPD scored an insurance goal in the 71st minute as Bernstein tallied off a fine pass from teammate, Tom Helly, who was named the MVP of the match, for a final score of 3-1.

"It was tough. FD's got a tough squad," Helly told Red Bull Reader. "The coach has been practicing with us for a couple months now getting ready for them. We worked together as a team and got it done."

This annual game benefits the New York City PBA Widows' and Children's Fund and the Firefighter Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation.

The New York City PBA Widows' and Children's Fund benefits the widows and children of New York City police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Firefighter Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation honors Sergio Villanueva who gave his life in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.

"Sergio was a friend and a teammate. It is almost 10 years now that we lost Sergio," FDNY coach Joe Brosi said. "Sergio was a police officer for eight years before he came over to the FD. That blood runs through both departments."

Fifty percent of the revenue from tickets sold went to the two foundations.
