The ninth annual memorial service honoring the members of the New York City Fire and Police Departments and the Port Authority Police Department who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and their families will be held at St. Michael's Cemetery, 72-02 Astoria Blvd., East Elmhurst, on Friday, September 10 at 2 p.m. Gus Antonopoulos of Farenga & Sons Funeral Home, Tom Golden of Gleason's Funeral Home, Kevin Mack of Thomas Quinn & Sons Funeral Home and George Stamatiades of David Funeral Home have extended their support for the event. Gazette Publisher Tony Barsamian will once again act as master of ceremonies; Roy Chicas, who has appeared and sung at prior St. Michael's memorial services, will offer selections for those in attendance. All are welcome.
The ceremony will be held in the section of St. Michael's where monuments to honor and remember the 23 NYPD officers, 76 Queens firefighters and the 37 officers of the PAPD who died on September 11 were dedicated at previous memorial services. Among the names on the firefighters' memorial is that of Christopher Santora, at 23 years of age the youngest firefighter to die at Ground Zero. Santora was the youngest child and only son of retired New York City Fire Department Deputy Chief Alexander Santora and his wife, Maureen; his interment at St. Michael's Cemetery was the impetus for the creation of the monuments honoring the memory of the members of the separate service agencies from Queens who died on 9/11. The First Responders Memorial differs from its predecessors in that it commemorates all First Responders except those who were lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
For more information about the memorial service, call Ed Horn, director of community relations at St. Michael's Cemetery, 72-02 Astoria Blvd., East Elmhurst; 718-278-3240.
